What you need to know before going to Sunway Lagoon, Malaysia

Sunway lagoon makes for a fun day at the amusement park.  It is mostly comprised of water attractions with a few thrill rides and roller coasters. There is something for the entire family, from the scream at the top of your lungs attractions to the nickelodeon kiddy water park and the petting zoo.  But there are some things you should know in advance to make the best of your day at Sunway Lagoon.

Buy your tickets in advance to save $

If you know you want to go buy your tickets online before going to save about 50 RM.  You don’t need to choose a date or even need to print anything off, just show them your booking id from your phone and they will take care of the rest.  The site is in English and fairly easy to book your tickets here:  http://www.sunwaylagoon.com/

Quack Express Sunway Lagoon

Don’t bother with Quack Express

There is an option to bypass all the lines with the Quack Express pass.  I would recommend not buying this advance and seeing the day of if the lines are really long.  They should be fine during the week, we never waited longer than 20 mins, most of the rides we walked right on.  If you do find you would like to have the option, it can be purchased in the park.

Take Public Transit

If you aren’t in a rush taking public transit is a great idea to save some money.  The total cost from KL Sentral to the Park was just over 7RM the trip was really easy only 1 transfer and about 1.5 hours.  Bring a sweater though because the AC is cranked high and you will freeze.  Get off at the Sunway Lagoon stop and follow the signs through the walkway. The full metro map is available here: KL mrt-map

Buy a multi-access locker

There are single use lockers for 5RM each open located close to each of the water park areas but I would definitely recommend getting a multi-use locker for 22RM located at multiple locations through the park. You will want to go back in a few times through the day.  No need to purchase in advance online unless you are going at a peak time like a public holiday or the weekend.

Fill your wristband with cash

You can buy anything in the park on the cashless wristband system which is amazing if you are planning on getting wet on the water rides.  Fill it up with more than you think you will use, as you can get the extra cash back BEFORE you leave the gift shop beside the exit (There are literally no signs telling you it is possible to get your money back but it is).

Don’t bring any snacks

The park has a rather strict no outside food or drinks policy, they search everything you bring for food/drinks.  So don’t bother bringing them because they will just get thrown away at the gate.  Water, however, is acceptable to bring inside.

Bring clothes to cover up in the water park

Malaysia is a largely Muslim country thus people are very modest and cover themselves from neck to ankle in most cases which means if you wear a bikini you will get some very unwelcome stares and feel out of place.  Trust me to bring a t-shirt and shorts to blend in.  (I ended up needing to wear Chris’s shirt all day, he was a minority being topless as a man)

Bring sandals you don’t care about or walk around barefoot

The water attractions are very strangely spread out in 3 different parts of the park, of course, you can’t wear shoes on water rides so you will need to either leave your shoes in the pathway (they very likely will get stolen if they are nice) or you go barefoot through the entire park.  We went barefoot, it wasn’t too bad, just gross if you have to use the bathroom.

Don’t rent a tube or anything for that matter

This was very deceiving though the park they had people trying to rent you a tube making it seem like you would need it to get on the water rides (all tubes are provided for rides), the tube rental is only for the lazy river.  Don’t waste your money.  Oh, and if you do rent the tube, you will have to carry it with you for the entire day! They also rent boogie and surf boards for the flow rider but again they provide it so no need!
